Annotation:The Living Planet Earth course introduces students to the position of our home planet in the Milky Way galaxy and the solar system. It compares conditions on Earth with those on the neighboring planets, Mars and Venus. It discusses the question, are there Earth-like planets in the cosmos? The course then focuses on the structure of the Earth, the magnetism of the Earth, plate motions on its surface, volcanoes and earthquakes, oceans, large rivers and lakes. We then move on to explain climate zones and deserts. Monsoons and the El Niño phenomenon are also important elements of the Earth's climate. Finally, we look at the Earth's vegetation zones and the distribution of selected animal species. The course also includes a lot of information about human and natural evolution, major environmental problems, and natural disasters. Overall, the course provides a major understanding of Earth as a planet and the evolution of life on it. The course can be very useful for seniors who want to learn about the Earth from a cosmic perspective, and also to learn more than what we read in the newspapers or what was in old textbooks. The course will be open with a minimum of 20 people.
