The Napoleonic Wars and the Czech Lands

Lecturer's medallion: A graduate of the University in History, postgraduate doctoral studies - History with a focus on Czech and Czechoslovak history.

Annotation: The main aim of the course is to introduce participants to the period of the Napoleonic Wars. The lectures will mainly focus on the personality and life of one of the most famous warlords Napoleon Bonaparte. Listeners will learn a lot of interesting information about his famous battles and campaigns. Attention will also be paid to the political context and general changes on the European continent brought about by the Napoleonic Wars. Another aim of the course is to introduce participants to the direct impact of the wars on the local population in the Czech lands. An integral part of the course will be excursions to trace the historical memory of the two French invasions of Moravia. In the winter semester, participants will take part in an excursion to the sites of the famous Battle of Austerlitz, the Peace Memorial and the Austerlitz Castle. In the summer semester it is possible to visit the memorials of the battles of Aspern, Wagram (Vienna) and Znojmo. Listeners may also be interested in stories about the everyday life of an ordinary soldier. We will also discuss this time from a different perspective. What could have been the motivation to fight, the experiences in the war, the various hardships associated with pain and suffering, but also the soldier's small joys. We will also learn about unusual topics such as medical care, military cuisine, and horses and other animals. An interesting part of the lectures will be a demonstration of tin soldiers of the period. The course will be open to a minimum of 20 people.
